BLOG: Overcoming Perfectionism

Overcoming Perfectionism

Last month's blog discussed burnout. Perfectionism can lead to burnout. While perfectionism can motivate you to perform at a high level, it can also cause unnecessary stress. Perfectionism is grounded in fear and worry. Many perfectionists fear that not being perfect will harm their reputation or value. However, perfectionism can be overcome with a mindset shift.

Recognizing you have a problem is always the first step in remediating it. Making a shift in your perspective from negative feelings of stress to the need for change will have a positive impact on your wellbeing.

Are you a perfectionist? Here is how to tell:

Consider the tradeoff of perfectionism. The level of effort it takes to be perfect is time-consuming! For example, let’s say you are crafting a presentation to give at your local library (establishing yourself as the expert). You complete the slides, so they contain all the necessary points you want to discuss, then spend another 2 hours making sure every last detail is perfect. Was that last two hours of your time worth it? Or could that time have been better spent finishing an evaluation report, writing up performance appraisals, connecting with a potential referral source, etc.? Don’t sweat the small stuff!
