BLOG: The 3 C's of Private Practice: Confidence
The 3 C's of Private Practice

In the first two parts of this series, we explored Clarity (knowing where you’re going) and Connection (building meaningful relationships with your clients, team, and yourself). But Clarity and Connection alone won’t move your practice forward unless they’re paired with the third, and most transformative element, Confidence.
Confidence is what allows you to act on your clarity and to show up fully in your connections. Ultimately, it’s what allows you to lead your private practice strategically.
Confidence Comes From Competence (and You're More Competent Than You Think)
As clinicians, we often underestimate how much expertise we already have. You’ve spent years developing your clinical skills, problem-solving in real time, supporting families, and making decisions that directly impact outcomes.
Running a private practice requires those same core skills:
- Clinical reasoning becomes business decision-making
- Treatment planning becomes strategic planning
- Supporting clients becomes leading your team
- Educating families becomes educating your community
You are not starting from zero; you are transferring and expanding skills you already possess. Confidence grows when you recognize that you are capable—not because you know everything, but because you know how to figure things out.
Confidence Requires You to Tolerate Discomfort
Growth in private practice will always involve moments of discomfort:
- Sending your first marketing email
- Quoting your full private pay rate (without apologizing)
- Hiring your first employee
- Saying no to something that no longer aligns
Discomfort is not a sign that you’re doing something wrong, it’s a sign that you’re doing something new.
Every private practice owner you admire has experienced uncertainty, doubt, and fear. The difference is not that they avoided those feelings—it’s that they moved forward anyway. Confidence is not the absence of fear, but the willingness to act despite it.
Confidence Is Strengthened by Keeping Promises to Yourself
One of the fastest ways to build confidence is by following through on your own commitments. This doesn’t mean making massive, overwhelming changes. It means making small, consistent promises and keeping them:
- Blocking time each week to work on your business (aka acting as the CEO)
- Nurturing a referral source
- Reviewing your finances regularly
- Delegating tasks that drain your energy
Each time you follow through, you reinforce your identity as a capable and reliable leader. Confidence grows through consistency, not perfection.
Confidence Allows You to Lead Your Practice—Instead of Reacting to It
Without confidence, it’s easy to stay in a reactive cycle:
- Saying yes to everything
- Avoiding decisions
- Undercharging
- Overworking
- Staying stuck in roles you’ve outgrown
Confidence allows you to shift into a CEO mindset. It allows you to make decisions based on alignment, sustainability, and long-term vision—not fear.
Confident practice owners:
- Charge rates that reflect their value
- Set boundaries that protect their energy
- Delegate and build support systems
- Invest in growth
- Trust themselves to navigate challenges
Confidence doesn’t eliminate uncertainty; it gives you the ability to move forward anyway. Every time you have a hard conversation, every time you make a business decision, every time you solve a problem, you’re creating proof for yourself that you can do this.
Clarity gives you the map. Connection gives you the support. Confidence is built by walking the path.
