BLOG: Staying Visible When the Economy Seems Uncertain

We’re all feeling it — the headlines, the inflation, the shifting policies that affect families, healthcare, and education. Many practice owners are noticing slower inquiries, reduced caseloads, or clients hesitant to start services. It’s normal to feel uneasy. But rather than pulling back, now is the time to lean into visibility and strategic marketing.

Keep moving forward,

Renee

Why Marketing is Non-Negotiable Right Now

When people feel uncertain, they look for stability. They seek providers they can trust. If you stop showing up online or in your community, potential clients assume you’re not available or that you’re slowing down. Consistent marketing says "We're here, we're thriving, and we're ready to help."

Marketing is also your chance to educate. Families may not understand that speech, OT, or feeding therapy are investments that can improve long term success. Your visibility helps them see the value behind the service.

How to Market Smarter (not Harder) on a Budget

You don’t need an expensive marketing agency or ad campaign. Focus on connection, consistency, and creativity.

  1. It's all about the Know-Like-Trust Factor
    1. First your prospective clients have to know you
    2. Once they know you, they start to like you and your brand
    3. Once they know and like you, trust starts to develop. Only when trust develops, will a client 'buy' your services!
  2. It's all about the Relationship - Create/strengthen positive relationships with colleagues, current and prospective clients, families, referral sources, schools, and the community.
  3. Checking In - Are there relationships you need to reignite? Reach out and let people know you are thinking about them. Use email, texting, Facebook Messenger, and even the phone. Consider providing a small high-value resource for them, e.g. article, link to a pertinent podcast.
  4. It's not about you -- it's about them! It's not about what they can do for you; rather, what you can do for them -- that is what will be remembered.
  5. Reuse and Repurpose - Take one great piece of content — a blog, tip sheet, or client success story — and turn it into multiple posts, emails, or short videos. Consistency builds familiarity.
  6. Engage Your Community - Share practical tips on social media that solve real problems: “How to help your child manage sensory overload,” or “3 easy ways to support clear speech at home.” Posts that help build trust and connection.
  7. Show Your Human Side - Authenticity sells. Share why you love your work, celebrate small wins, and let followers see the people behind the logo.
  8. Little things DO count!
    1. Little touchpoints nurture a relationship and can be used to build and maintain a relationship
    2. Applies to your network and your clients
    3. Examples:
      1. Repost on LinkedIn
      2. Send an article of interest
      3. Send a note through snail mail
      4. Follow up after connecting with someone new

Remember - consistency beats perfection. If you can show up consistently, with genuine value and connection, your practice will not only survive these ups and downs - it will emerge stronger.

Other Ways to Reduce Expenses (Other than Cutting Your Marketing Budget)

Start with a review of your business' financial data and systems. Having the right systems in place will allow you to operate your business efficiently. It is also important to know your numbers, so you have the right information to act upon. Reviewing and revising your financial plan is critical to all aspects of your business. Explore new sources of revenue so you don't have all of your eggs in one basket. This is a great time of year to be working on your strategic plan for 2026.

1. Audit your expenses - Take a look at recurring monthly expenses. Are you making use of all of your software, apps, memberships, etc. Can any expenses be consolidated or reduced?

2. Negotiate vendor rates - Don't be afraid to ask for a better deal. Loyalty and long-term use can be leveraged for reduced rates.

3. Outsource Strategically - Outsourcing services can be a more affordable way to get expert help only when you need it and without the added costs employees bring (like benefits and payroll taxes).

Economic and political uncertainty can stir up fear, but fear-based decision-making is rarely sustainable. Instead of reacting by slashing your marketing budget, respond with strategy.
