BLOG: Beyond the Transition: How to Grow in Your Private Practice

You’ve made the bold move to private pay. You’ve made the decisions, set up systems, educated your clients, and are beginning to feel the freedom and clarity this model provides. But the journey doesn’t end here.

Now it’s time to thrive! You’ve worked hard to build this foundation—now it’s time to build a life and business that supports you right back.

To your private pay success,

Renee

4 Key Areas to Move Beyond the Transition

Here are the areas to focus on as you move beyond the transition and into a season of growth, sustainability, and confidence in your business.

  1. Re-evaluate Success on Your Terms - It isn't just defined by a full caseload or monthly revenue. It might look like:

    • a shorter workweek
    • seeing fewer clients but making more per hour
    • working only with your Right-Fit Clients
    • having time to be present with your family or to recharge your batteries
      • ACTION - Define 2-3 non-financial markers of success and track then monthly
  2. Regularly Review (and Adjust) Your Rates - Your private pay rate is a living number and should be reviewed annually to account for:

    • experience and demand
    • clinical time spent outside of sessions
    • business expenses/overhead
    • personal goals
      • ACTION - Put a rate review on your calendar every 12 months
  3. Keep Marketing (Even When You're Full) - Practices thrive on referrals and visibility. Don't pause marketing just because your calendar is full today.

    • Stay active on your choice of platforms (choose 1 to do consistently and well before adding another). Consistency is key.
    • Build waitlists
    • Stay top-of-mind with potential clients, past clients and referral sources
      • ACTION -  Do at least one low-lifting marketing activity each week.
      • A monthly email newsletter is a great way to reach current, past, and potential clients, as well as referral sources.
  4. Step Fully into the CEO Role - Lead with vision rather than just reacting to the day-to-day

    • Delegate, delegate, delegate
      1. administrative tasks that don't require your specific attention
      2. clinical tasks that will not only free up your time, but help your staff grow
    • Outsource* tasks that you don't enjoy and/or aren't in your wheelhouse (marketing, bookkeeping, etc.)
    • Set and track monthly, quarterly, and annual goals
    • Regularly review financial reports
    • Build your support team (accountant, coach, VA, attorney)
      • ACTION - Schedule regular times on your calendar to review metrics, goals, challenges, etc.

Transitioning to private pay is a bold and empowering move—but it’s just the beginning. Thriving in this model means intentionally nurturing your business through clear systems, aligned marketing, confident leadership, and a mindset rooted in growth. By prioritizing sustainability and stepping fully into your role as CEO, you're building more than just a caseload—you’re creating a practice that supports your life, your values, and your long-term vision. You’ve already done the hard part. Now it’s time to thrive.
